Four-Bangers a go for the US?

MotoringFile Sections: E81/82/E87 1 Series, E90 3 Series, EfficientDynamics, In the Press Sep 4th, 2008 9 Comments

According to Edmunds.com European correspondent, Matt Davis, BMW may bring North America a four-cylinder 1 Series and 3 series. This goes hand in hand with the previous news we had reported on that BMW is planning on decreasing production of larger displacement engines. Our sources have indicated that there are some 1 series four-bangers cruising around the US, and we may have posted a photo of one them here.

From Edmunds: MUNICH, Germany — While VW-Audi has shown its U.S. interest with a brand-new plant going up in Tennessee, and Mercedes has the upper ground on all German premiums with its clear diesel initiative in North America, BMW North America’s bold statement has not yet come. The company could use a big, mind-grabbing statement to bolster its profit base, and the smaller 1 Series introduction may not have the impact it is looking for in the U.S. market.

Enter the idea of a four-cylinder engine for the 3 Series.

BMW USA Sales Down 4.1% for August

MotoringFile Sections: Official News, Sales/Marketing Sep 3rd, 2008 1 Comment

The following press release sums it up fairly well, BMW is down for the year compared to the last but Mini is up. After the release is a PDF of the sales figures in chart form, in it you will notice that the archaic X3 is getting beat down fairly hard with over a 38% drop in sales compared to last year, though the X5 is way up.

BMW to say good-bye to large displacement engines.

MotoringFile Sections: EfficientDynamics, In the Press Sep 3rd, 2008 13 Comments

BMW continues to make some of the best big engines out there as is shown year after year with the wins in the engine of the year contest. But what happens when you make something so great (reputably the BEST) and nobody wants it? You must shift gears and adjust to the market’s demands. That is want BMW intends to do, rid itself of the V8 and V12 gas guzzlers in favor of smaller 4 cylinder power-plants. The real disheartening fact is that the silky smooth and fairly efficient I-6 may be set to get the boot sometime in the not so distant future.

Consumer Reports rates 135i top Sporty Car

MotoringFile Sections: E81/82/E87 1 Series, In the Press Sep 3rd, 2008 1 Comment

Consumer Reports may not be a well loved source of reviews for enthusiasts but in this case they did compare a nice group of cars. The 135 went up against the Subaru WRX STi, VW R32, Mitsubishi Lancer EVO, the Volvo C30 and a few other models. In the end the BMW come out on tops points wise but of course without long term reliability CR can not recommend the car, though they do recommend the Subarus they tested.

European Delivery Part IV: Financing

MotoringFile Sections: BMWCCA, European Delivery, Sales/Marketing Sep 2nd, 2008 2 Comments

This part of our BMW European delivery (US) series has been long over due but should add some valuable information to this popular feature. If you have not read through the previous installments you can begin your journey here.

In the past we had discussed things up until the actual closing of the deal. Whether it is a lease or finance this is where people can get hung up sometimes. Unlike a normal car purchase you must pay for the car at least one week in advance of your scheduled Munich pick up, so your financing must be secured in advance of that.

September Lease Rates to Jump….

MotoringFile Sections: Official News, Sales/Marketing Aug 28th, 2008 11 Comments

As we have been reporting for a while now here, at BimmerFile, BMWNA is going to focus more in the coming years on sales and profit per sale rather than volume and leasing. The concept of “pulling” cars from Germany rather than “pushing” them while stocked on lots is one key component of this strategy, the other is by offering leases that have lower residuals and higher money factors.

You can say good-bye to those $399 lease specials, just so BMW can help dealers empty lots of cars in low demand or even to just drive up sales numbers. Unlike years past, expect to see financing for purchasing to be more attractive. You can chalk this all up to the economy, exchange rates and the over-flooded used car market killing residuals. These moves will help sure up the brand and keep it financially strong and decrease the end of lease risks. It will also decrease the volume of BMW cars on the road, providing some more brand cache (something that has declined over the past few years…)

BMW Cancels the M3 CSL

MotoringFile Sections: //M3\\ Aug 27th, 2008 19 Comments

Car magazine is reporting that BMW has shelved plans for the M3 CSL. It’s not surprising given the constraints put on the company by the dollar and the general worldwide economy. Still it’s an unfortunate in that BMW has decided to put money towards an M version of the X6 and X5 rather than stick to their roots with traditional M type vehicles.

How the Advanced Diesels meet 50 state emissions

MotoringFile Sections: E70 X5, E90 3 Series, EfficientDynamics Aug 19th, 2008 4 Comments

As proponents of BMW finally returning diesel technology to us in the US we have given you a great deal of information on them; although for the most part we have barely touched the surface.

In order to meet strict US emissions requirements BMW (and other manufacturers) had to use a variety of technologies to bring us the amazing torque and efficiency of diesel motors once again.

BMW will be offering us in the US only two models initially: the 335d (sedan only) and the X5 xDrive35d. Though you can still dream of other models down the road as BMW is not opposed to offering them but rather letting the market warm to the diesels with the most popular models first. Can you blame them?

BMW Welt: Chemical Spill

MotoringFile Sections: BMWCCA, In the Press Aug 18th, 2008 No Comments

Even with German efficiency and caution mishaps can happen. Jonathan Spira, is reporting on the BMWCCA website that nine BMW employees were hospitalized for observation after fumes were detected at the BMW Welt. The public was not directly impacted though the streets around the Welt were closed for a short time. We hope that the employees are well and have no ill effects of the spill.

For ongoing coverage and further details please see the BMWCCA posting.

BMW 128i vs MINI Clubman S

MotoringFile Sections: E81/82/E87 1 Series, In the Press, MINI Aug 14th, 2008 7 Comments

clubman vs 1 seriesNow this is new. Edmunds has decided to pit the newest BMW against the newest MINI Cooper.

Season the Mini with a few options and it costs about the same as the BMW 1 Series. Both are known for being fun to drive and both are designed to hold two people comfortably but can accommodate four if the need arises. Both have usefully large cargo areas — the rear seats in each folds flat to enhance capacity. And both come standard with a six-speed manual transmission.

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
